Local Opportunities


Opportunity 1

Title: Police: Missing Fort Myers man liked to visit Sarasota County
Story: there is a man who is originally from Fort Myers who disappeared, and the police has not been able to find him yet. This man liked to visit the area of Sarasota County, and in fact did not have any known medical conditions.
Problem: there is a concern that this might have been a crime situation either in the area of Sarasota or in Fort Myers.
Who has the problem: the missing person’s family, Fort Myers residents, Sarasota residents, police, tourists.

Opportunity 2

Title: Where is the entrance of downtown Sarasota? Group says it’s near the beaches. The city says it’s not
Story: Sarasota’s “Downtown Improvement District” have been trying to build a gateway sign that would beautify its entrance, and inform tourists when they have entered downtown Sarasota.
Problem: although the project is widely supported by residents, the city’s government says that downtown Sarasota does not have an official entrance, and have rejected the gateway project three times.
Who has the problem: “Downtown Improvement District” group, residents of downtown Sarasota, local government, tourists.

Opportunity 3

Title: Clock is ticking on Siesta Key beach barrier
Story: there is a couple who are owners of a private beach in Siesta Key. They claim that they often have people trespass their property to do inappropriate things and even illegal activities, so they decided to improvise a barrier made out of stones and ropes.
Problem: although it is their private property, city laws prohibit people from modifying the beach or repositioning materials within it, so it has become a legal fight between the owners and city officials.
Who has the problem: the owners of the house, city officials, beach tourists.

Opportunity 4

Title: Protest ahead of EPA fish farm hearing in Sarasota
Story: a company named Kampachi Farms, which until now only operated in Hawaii, is trying to expand to the Gulf of Mexico, and very close to Sarasota area. The practices that this company does are said to cause negative effects in the environment.
Problem: multiple environmentalists are planning to do demonstrations in the place where the hearing to grant permissions will occur.
Who has the problem: environmentalists, residents, Kampachi Farms, city government.

Opportunity 5

Title: Sarasota residents mourn last few days of Lucky’s
Story: since Lucky’s Market recently declared bankruptcy, multiple Sarasota residents who liked shopping at this place are now going to have to find other alternatives, as the store will be closing soon.
Problem: people who liked the products that Lucky’s Market used to offer are now in a situation where they have to find another place to do their groceries.
Who has the problem: grocery shoppers, Lucky’s Market, people who like organic products.

    All of these articles and opportunities presented here are very interesting especially the first one. The fact that a man has disappeared and has not been found is tragic for the family and I hope the police finds a way to use this opportunity to gather enough evidence to find him. Overall great work!
